Spam Wars Are Over and the Filters Have Won

I like numbers… page counters, percentages of this to that, how many spammers can fit through the eye of a needle, PE evaluations, etc….

So while looking at various statistics I realized that the spam wars are done. Oh the amount of spam email floating around is increasing but THE FILTERS ARE WINNING. The amount of unwanted email reaching inboxes is steadily decreasing.

Except for very small businesses with no IT staff, everyone and their brother have some for of email filtering in use. (Correspondingly, it seems that everyone and their brother have developed email filtering software/hardware and put it on the market – Shake out time soon, I’d only go with firms that have long proven track records… a shameless plug for CMS).

So now the question is how to use an email filter to improve general business operations and bottom line revenue.

This very question was the subject of a new page I just placed on the main CMS website… Going Beyond Spam Filtering. Lots of good ideas there and better yet, lots of ways to insure that revenues are not lost through inefficient or improper email use.

Check it out. While researching the page I talked with folks who filled me in on ways to use eMail filtering that I had never even thought of. Each idea having nothing to do with just spam filtering but everything to with using email filtering efficiently.

A Unique Player in the Managed eMail Game

As of yet no official press release but check the search engines under subjects like “Outsourced Email Filtering” and you’ll see, usually page 1, a new player in the game… Praetor Managed eMail (Praetor MeM for short).

CMS is offering this unique email management service and as the tag line says, “Your email is filtered on your server and CMS does the work”.

How does Praetor MeM work? CMS technicians remotely connect to a server you designate and then install, configure and administer the Praetor MeM filter. Your email remains safe and secure on servers located on your own premises, different from other outsourcing services.

Now security conscious companies can have CMS manage their spam filter and not worry about confidential email residing on PC’s outside of their control. Perfect for law firms and doctors. Perfect for everyone in business anywhere.

Now to just push the PR folks for the press release to let the world outside of Google, Yahoo and MSN search engines know about the new player in the game.

Crystal balls & the future of spam

Apologies to Nostradamus and Edgar Cayce, but I thought I’d turn to the “crystal ball of the Internet” and peer into the future of spam.

I purposely avoided the usual “STUDIES INDICATE SPAM WILL INCREASE BY 1000000% BY 2010” and went for the more amusing predictions.

So without further delay and in the words of Bullwinkle"Eenie-beenie, chili-weenie, the spirits are about to speak".

  • "Spam will be classified as a terrorist activity" (CNN)
[Does our eMail come with different color levels too?]

  • "I imagine a computer that will act as personal assistant. It would give you a rundown of what it did "for you" today. For example: "Hello Doug, I routed 32 pieces of spam to your spam folder". (CNN)
    [
Only 32! Where does this person's email exist? In H.A.L? "Computer delete email". "I'm sorry Dave, I afraid I can't do that".]

  • "By 2009 we estimate that 51% of corporate mailboxes will be protected by 2 anti-virus layers". (TMCNet)
[The vendor: double revenue. The end user: double protection. The company: double cost. The email admin: double headaches.]

  • "Weblogs may turn out to be The Next Thing for spammers". (KALYR)
[I'm waiting for my first Weblog "V_i_a_g_r_a" to show up]

Here, let me state this incredibly obvious prediction... As TiVo is killing the 30 second spot, spammers will always be inventing new ways to invade mailboxes. No surprise here.

Hmmm... I think I'll sell spammer space at the end of my blog.
