Chinese Buried Under 16.8 Pieces of Spam Weekly

I’m biting the insides of my cheeks real hard not to laugh out loud at this one, but here is a recent CNN.Com item on spam targeting Chinese eMail users.

China now has 111 million Internet users, second only to the United States, and Xinhua said Tuesday that each e-mail subscriber in China received an average of 16.8 pieces of junk e-mail a week from August 2004 to April 2005”. (CNN.COM)

Also in the article is this quote... "China has become seriously affected by junk e-mail".

“16.8 pieces a week”, my filters catch that much in one hour. And if they are seriously affected by this torrential (note sarcasm) flood of 16.8 pieces per week, imagine the paralysis that would occur if they were on the receiving end of the mountains of spam we typically have targeting us.

With the Chinese already attempting to control Internet content, it could be interesting to see how well the spammers fair against the Chinese filters already humming to block thoughts, pictures and discussions deemed inappropriate. Remember, spammers are rather resourceful.

Just FYI… China is number 3 on the list of top spamming countries for 2005, following the USA and South Korea. Apparently, they don’t target their own citizens.
