Changing the SMTP port number used by the Domino SMTP MTA

Note:

If you are using Domino version prior to R5, please read this FAQ to see if your SMTP MTA can be set to listen to a different port number.

When Praetor is installed on the same machine as the Domino server, you will need to allow it to be the main reception process of incoming messages. This will require you to set the SMTP component of Domino to relinquish the inbound SMTP port 25 to Praetor. Thus you will need to set Domino to receive on a different port and we recommend that you use port 28.

To change this setting in Domino, use the Administrator program and select the Configuration tab. If the Server object in the left pane is collapsed, expand it and select on the All Server Documents. The screen will appear as follows.

In the right pane, select the Domino server where Praetor will be installed and double-click. When the screen changes to show the properties for that server, select the tabs: Ports, Internet Ports, Mail. The screen will then appear as follows.

The setting that you need to change is the located on the line for the TCP/IP port number, under the column heading of Mail (SMTP Inbound). Change the value from the original 25 to the recommended 28. Leave the Mail (SMTP Outbound) value unchanged at 25.

Press <ESC> to save and close this properties page.

For Domino SMTP server to use this change, it will need to be stopped and restarted. Click here to see how to accomplish this. When this is done, you will also need to stop and restart the SMTP virtual server using IIS Manager since as installed it began and could not obtain access to port 25 that the Domino SMTP server just relinquished.

Note:

Praetor is ready to begin filtering inbound mail items from the Internet, forward them on port 28 to the Domino server. If you also want Praetor able to filter for outbound messages, it is necessary to re-route all outgoing mail from the Domino server back to Praetor. This is accomplished using the Lotus Domino Administrator program and changing the designated smarthost. Click here to read more on how to change this setting from its default state.
